George Crockett Strong (1832-1863), a native of Vermont, received an appointment from Massachusetts to attend the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Concentrating in ordnance, he graduated fifth in his 1857 class of thirty-eight cadets. Initially appointed second lieutenant, Ordnance, July 1859, Strong steadily rose through the ranks.
